Conference Call for Papers
Rhetorical Citizenship and
Democratic Education in
the Baltic Sea Region
6–8 May 2026, Södertörn University, Stockholm, Sweden
Schools play a vital role in preparing students for democratic participation by fostering skills in argumentation, deliberation, and rhetorical expression. Across the Baltic Sea region, teachers and researchers are exploring how rhetorical education can strengthen civic engagement in secondary education. This conference brings them together to share practices, challenges, and ideas for developing democratic competencies through rhetorical instruction.

How do we teach
democratic participation?
DEMORHET/READy explores how rhetorical education prepares young people for citizenship. The project investigates how rhetorical and deliberative practices are articulated in policy, enacted in classrooms, and experienced by students. Combining rhetorical theory with educational research, DEMORHET/READy examines current cross-curricular challenges in secondary education. Its aim is to show how rhetorical competencies can strengthen democratic participation and civic resilience..
